A hit show for ABC from 2003 to 2012, Extreme Home Makeover has returned to the air on HGTV as Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Presented Sunday nights at 9:00p.m. Eastern Time, it is hosted by Jesse Tyler Ferguson of Modern Family fame.
The original program began as a reality show involving cosmetic surgery, then shifted focus to building large homes. This is largely seen as a response to Americans’ focus on home living after 9/11.
Although the original series drew criticism for building expensive residences that their new owners could not afford to live in, the 2020 version takes a scaled-down approach. What remains is the show’s patented emotional appeal. For instance, the first family in the new show include the three children of a single mother, whose father died accidentally.
Another unchanged feature is the program’s finale. As before, the crowd chants “Move that bus” when it is driven away for the big reveal.
